We offer Orton Gillingham reading tutoring for elementary age children.
Orton Gillingham is an intensive phonics-based multi-sensory system that is effective for all children, but it’s especially beneficial to children with dyslexia.
Some of our methods break from standard Orton Gillingham approaches, and instead, we use Structured Word Inquiry. In Orton Gillingham methods, children are taught to memorize words that don’t adhere to common phonetic rules. In Structured Word Inquiry, students are taught how to research and analyze the morphology and/or etymology of such words. Memorization isn’t necessary because through the inquiry process, learners discover why ‘irregular’ words are spelled the way that they are.
The tutoring is provided by Greg Brown. He has 13 years of teaching experience. For four years he taught special education, and he used Orton Gillingham as his primary reading intervention. He’s clocked over 1000 hours worth of Orton Gillingham instruction, and he has completed over 35 hours worth of training through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education. He also holds a masters degree in special education. He has taught many grade levels, but most of his experience is in 3rd and 4th grade. As a 3rd grade teacher he earned Teacher of the Year Award from the Portland Council PTA.
Greg’s sessions are on Tuesday - Saturday. On weekdays, his sessions are at 4:15-5:15 and 5:30-6:30. On Saturday he has seven, hour-long sessions starting at 8:30.
Most slots have been filled during the regular schedule. To join the waiting list, please fill out the form below. Eventually, we will hire a second tutor, so we expect there to be many openings soon.
